House Education Committee defer HB1325 to 41st day

PIERRE, S.D.(HubCityRadio)- The South Dakota House Education Committee heard testimony on HB1325.  The bill prohibit the Board of Regents and institutions under its control from requiring certain students to reside in on-campus housing or purchase meal plans.

Prime sponsor of the bill is Representative Dylan Jordan of Clear Lake talks about reducing the number of years required on the dorms from two years down to one.

Jordan inform the committee that students going to college should be considered as adults.

Jordan also expressed concerns about the meal plans implemented by the schools.

Opposing the bill was NSU student and the Executive Director of South Dakota Student Foundation, Sam Brumfield.

Brumfield express concerns if passed how the school could implement this.

Also opposing was NSU Student Body President Abiah(A-Bee-Ah) George who talks about the housing situation in Aberdeen.

George talks about the benefits of dorm life for students.

The committee voted 8-7 to defer the bill to the 41st day.
