PIERRE, S.D.(SDBA)- Two bills aimed at strengthening South Dakota’s emergency medical services moved forward Tuesday, as lawmakers pointed to ongoing staffing challenges for rural ambulance crews.
House Bill 1023, as amended, would allow registered nurses and licensed practical nurses to serve on ambulance crews under state law and provides liability protection when they act within their training.
Rep. Tim Walburg of Madison said the bill clears up confusion that has left nurses uncertain about their role.
A second measure, House Bill 1024, as amended, changes how ambulance drivers are trained and certified. Supporters say earlier state-level requirements made it harder for volunteers to help.

Both bills passed the committee unanimously and now head to the House floor.
