House Majority Leader reflect back on Veto Day and look ahead to the summer studies

PIERRE, S.D.(DRGNews)- The South Dakota Legislature did not overturn any of the five vetoes issued by Governor Kristi Noem during this year’s legislative session. Lawmakers sustained one during the session and did the same with the other four earlier this week on the final day of this year’s session.

House Majority Leader Will Mortenson of Pierre wasn’t surprised.

Following adjournment from the legislative session, Executive Board members met to select summer study topics. Mortenson says one of them is how long-term care is delivered.

He says the other topic they’ll look into is how counties are funded.

Mortenson says lawmakers’ work doesn’t stop when the legislative session ends.

Representative Roger Chase of Huron will chair the county funding committee. Senator Randy Diebert of Spearfish is the co-chair.

Senator Jean Hunhoff of Yankton will chair the long-term care summer study committee, with Assistant Majority Leader Representative Taylor Rehfeldt of Sioux Falls as the Vice-Chair.
