House passes bill requiring birth certificate record of person’s sex at birth

PIERRE, S.D. (WNAX) – The South Dakota House debated and passed a bill that requires a birth certificate record of a person’s sex at birth.

The bill had been defeated in a House committee but was smoked out for debate on the floor.

Bill sponsor, Representative Fred Deutsch (doy-tch) of Florence says vital data needs to be preserved.

Representative Shawn Bordeaux (bore-dough) of Mission says it’s a bad bill.

Representative Bethany Soye of Sioux Falls says it’s a matter of facts and truth.

The bill passed on a vote of 39-31 and will next be heard in the Senate.
