PIERRE, S.D.(WNAX)- The House Redistricting Committee of the South Dakota legislature meeting today, (Friday) approved amendments to their earlier released legislative redistricting map.
During public comments, Bret Healy with “4 Directions Native Vote” said the current map could violate federal fair voting laws.
Boneshirt was the legal challenge twenty years ago that led to single member House districts.
Healy said the new version of the map was worse.
Committee member, Representative Jon Hansen of Dell Rapids, offered an amendment to move some precincts around.
The committee approved the amendment map on a vote of six to one. Legislators meet in special session on November 8th to see if they can find a compromise between House and Senate maps.
