PIERRE, S.D.(KBRK)- The legislature’s House State Affairs committee Friday advanced a bill defining the terms ‘man’ and ‘woman’ and prohibiting government funding for anything contrary to those definitions.

District 25 state Rep. Jon Hansen, R-Dell Rapids is the prime sponsor of House Bill 1184 and said this is about biology rather than ideology.

District 10 state Rep. Erin Healy, D-Sioux Falls said this law is not needed.

District 31 state Rep. Scott Odenbach, R-Spearfish is the committee chair and took issue with the suggestion from both Healy and District 26 state Rep. Eric Emery, D-Rosebud that this measure was an attack on trans people.

The committee voted 10-2 (with one member excused) to advance House Bill 1184 to the full house floor with a ‘do pass’ recommendation.
