House Transportation Committee hear testimony on highway safety

PIERRE, S.D.(KBRK)- The state House Transportation Committee heard testimony Tuesday on highway safety.

Bob Perry is state public safety secretary.

He said they’re still seeing too many motorcycle fatalities.

Statewide, there were 1,792 D-U-I arrests last year — 202 came from sobriety checkpoints.

Rob Weinmeister is director of the state Office of Highway Safety. He said distracted driving remains an under-reported problem.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says distracted driving accounts for roughly eight percent of traffic fatalities nationwide.
