ABERDEEN, SD (HubCityRadio.com) – During a Wolves Midweek edition of “The Sports Hub” on Fox Sports Aberdeen, the “Voice of the Wolves,” David Tukesbrey brought in one of the newest member of the Northern State University Hall of Fame (to be inducted in October of ’23) Kyle Johnson.
He was a graduate of NSU in 2000; during his time as a Wolf, he was named a 13-time NSIC All-Conference performer in both basketball and T&F. A three time NSU T&F MVP and he also played on three NSIC Championship Men’s basketball teams.
Johnson primarily played basketball at Northern, but he also competed in track & field. He said that being able to be a multi-sport athlete at the collegiate level was a big deal for him.
He says that he had the opportunity to play under one of the best coaches, Bob Olson.
Johnson reflects on what made Coach Olson such a special Coach.
Now, he’s the owner and mortgage consultant for “Quality Choice Mortgage” in Minnesota. Johnson explains how his time at NSU prepared him for the ‘real world.’
In the back half of the show, Tukes visited with the NCAA DII All-American, Sam Masten. He’ll be heading overseas to play for the Derby Trailblazers in the United Kingdom.
Masten talks about the signing process & heading overseas.
Not that long ago, he was able to walk across the stage and receive his diploma. He says that experience walking was a huge deal and it meant a lot to him.
During his time at Northern State, Masten was named an “All-American” on the hardwood. He reflected on when he put his name in the transfer portal, he never thought he’d be where he’s at today.
Tukes asked, “Why Northern State & why Aberdeen?” Masten says the city of Aberdeen and the support was just incredible and unlike other programs.
Masten not only loved being a Wolf, but playing for Head Coach, Saul Phillips was a huge opportunity to gel with somebody who he called, “a players coach.”
