PIERRE, S.D.(KCCR)- The opposition nearly doubled the supporters, but the Hughes County Board of Adjustment approved a conditional use permit to allow ENGIE North America to construct the 72-turbine North Bend Wind Farm in Hughes County. Leonard Spomer of Pierre spoke out against the permit saying Hughes County needs stronger ordinances on wind projects.
Jan Bollweg-Krull of Harrold is a Hughes County landowner who has agreed to let North Bend build on her land.
Board of Adjustment Chair Tom Tveit says his concern was what happens to haul roads for the project between initial and final inspections.
The conditional use permit was amended before final approval to include ENGIE and the county finding a mutually agreed upon third party to consider haul road conditions during the project. The Board of Adjustment approved the permit four to one.
