PIERRE, S.D.(DRGNews)- The Hughes County Sheriff’s Office is warning people about an old scam that’s going around again.
Sheriff Patrick Callahan says callers are claiming to be from his office and telling people they need to pay a fine for missing jury duty.
Callahan says like many other scams, this one targets the elderly.
Callahan says never pay anyone claiming you must “pay up now or go to jail,” because no sheriff’s office would conduct legitimate business that way. He says if you receive a call you feel is suspicious, do NOT give out any personal or financial information and hang up immediately.
People are encouraged to report scam attempts to:
- their local law enforcement agencies,
- the South Dakota Attorney General’s Office Consumer Protection Division, and/or
- the Better Business Bureau’s Scam Tracker.
