EAGLE BUTTE, S.D. (KCCR) – Tribal law enforcement made a major drug bust in Dewey County last week. Cheyenne River Sioux Tribal Police officers made a traffic stop for speeding in a U-Haul truck around 1:30 Thursday afternoon on U.S. Highway 212 near Eagle Butte. During the stop, drug detection K-9 was deployed and alerted officers to the odor of drugs. An inspection of the cargo area of the vehicle found 147 packages that weighed approximately 157 pounds. The marijuana was found sealed in the bottom of three couches.
Cheyenne River Sioux Tribal Law Enforcement arrested a man, Brenden Lee and a woman Sara Worthman, both from Indiana. Worthman told police she and Lee flew to Idaho, rented the truck then drove to California where it was loaded for a trip to Chicago. Lee indicated everything in the vehicle was his and it was his operation. The told officers he paid Worthman $10,000 dollars to drive on the trip.
The marijuana was turned confiscated and turned over along with other items to federal authorities for prosecution. Both are facing federal charges of Possession with Intent to Distribute a Controlled Substance and Conspriacy to Distribute a Controlled Substance.
