PIERRE, S.D.(KELO)- South Dakota’s Indigent Legal Defense program is still in its infancy, but it’s getting high marks.

The Legislature approved and funded the new program this year, forming an oversight Commission.

A six-month study by the 6th Amendment Center commends the state for the actions it’s taking.

Still, Supreme Court Chief Justice Steven Jensen says there’s a lot of work to be done.

Among the biggest changes to make – hiring and training lawyers across the state to represent indigent defendants, and providing adequate funding for the defense work.
