James River Water Development District Board putting money into fighting zebra mussels

YANKTON, S.D.(WNAX)- The James River Water Development District Board is putting some money into fighting zebra mussels.

The tiny clams multiply rapidly underwater, often plugging water intakes and covering other structures.

District Executive Director Dave Bartel says they are working with the South Dakota Lakes and Streams Association.

Bartel says they don’t see any way to shut off the spread of the mussels.

Bartel says mussels have a wide impact.

Many lakes and streams in eastern South Dakota now have infestations of mussels.
