Jane Elizabeth Gruenwald, age 65, passed away on Tuesday, April 28, 2026, at Redfield Community Memorial Hospital. Jane fought with strength for over ten years with many hospitalizations, surgeries, and complications. Through cornea donation, Jane’s final act of kindness was the gift of sight.

Graveside services, officiated by Pastor Melissa Rowenhorst, will be held at 1:00 PM Saturday, June 6, at Greenlawn Cemetery in Redfield. A reception will follow at the Senior Center in Redfield.

Arrangements have been entrusted to Hyke Funeral Home in Redfield (www.hykefuneralhome.com).

She was born in Redfield, SD, on June 4, 1960, to Stuart and Dolores Benning. She was the adored baby of the family and the youngest born cousin on both the Benning and Tanner sides of her family. She was raised alongside her brother, Kim Benning, and her sister, Joan Benning. She attended kindergarten through twelfth grade at Redfield Public Schools. She attended classes at Lake Area Technical School in Watertown following graduation.

Jane was married to Jerry Gruenwald in 1979, and together they built a family. They raised their five children, Angela, Beth, Cara, Daron, and Evan, while living in Redfield and for a short time in Pierre, SD. Jane and Evan also lived in Hill City, SD, for a brief time.

Jane loved her parents dearly and demonstrated that love through the special care she gave them in their final years.

She loved playing cards with her family and many friends and treasured the time spent laughing, visiting, and sharing life together. Jane also enjoyed baking, crafting, planting summer flowers, and sharing a beer with family and friends.

Throughout her life, Jane worked in many different occupations, but one of her most cherished roles was working at the senior center, where she loved cooking, baking, and spending time with the seniors.

She was preceded in death by her beloved parents Stuart and Dolores Benning, brother Scott, grandbabies Finnley and Waylon, and brother-in-law Marv Wold.

She is survived by her daughter – Angela (Rob) Turck of Redfield and grandkids, Autumn (Landon) Kopecky (great-grandbabies Banks, Wrenley, Harlow, and Baby), Courtney Turck, and Trae Turck; daughter – Beth (Justin) Haider of Redfield and grandkids, Kolton Haider (great-grandbaby Lainey), Jerron Haider, and Kenna Haider; daughter – Cara Gruenwald of Post Falls, ID, and grandkids, Jaylin Gruenwald and Caleb Johnson; son – Daron (Paula) Gruenwald of Spearfish, SD, and grandkids, Keegan Gruenwald and Davin Gruenwald; son – Evan Gruenwald of Redfield, and grandkids, Abel Gruenwald and Hope Gruenwald; brother – Kim (Marcia) Benning of Hill City, SD; and sister – Joan Benning of Columbia Heights, MN.

Though our hearts are heavy, we find comfort in knowing she is at peace and is no longer in pain or suffering and reunited with those she loved so dearly.
