ABERDEEN, S.D.(Aberdeen American News)- The courthouse erupted in shouts of joy from Jarrett Jones’ family shortly after 9 p.m. Tuesday.
After eight hours of deliberation, a jury of five men and seven women found Jarrett Jones not guilty of not only first-degree murder, but second-degree murder and first- and second-degree manslaughter.
Jones, 50, of Bath, is charged with murder in the death of Jon Schumacher, 28, of Mina, who died Jan. 2, 2020 after being shot twice in the shop area of Jarrett Jones’ home. The trial, which was originally schedule to take up to three weeks, has included four days of testimony, which ended Monday.
The jury heard closing arguments Tuesday morning, and were deliberating shortly after noon. The jury returned with a verdict shortly before 9 p.m.
Schumacher’s family arrived moments after the verdict was read as Jarrett Jones and his family celebrated with hugs and tears. Schumacher’s family was quickly ushered to another part of the courthouse.
