The funeral service for Joan M. Darcy, 94, of Aberdeen, SD, will be 1:00pm, Thursday, September 24, 2026, at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home. Burial will be at Mellette Cemetery. Joan died Saturday, September 19, at Prairie Heights HealthCare in Aberdeen, SD.

Visitation will be one hour prior to the service on Thursday at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 South Main Street.

Joan Darcy was born July 14, 1932, to Fred and Ruth (Allen) Hornaman, in Groton, SD. At age 16, Joan gave up candy for Lent and never had it again, something she was very proud of. In high school she worked as the coat/hat check attendant at the Richmond Pavillion. She graduated from Aberdeen Central High School.

On August 17, 1963, Joan was united in marriage to Howard Darcy in Aberdeen. She devoted her life to caring for their home and raising their children. She loved doing yardwork including trimming the hedges and even painting the house.

Joan was a lifelong member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Aberdeen. She enjoyed riding in the truck with Howard for his work. Many fond memories were made during their annual family vacation to the Black Hills. One of her favorite pastimes was having daily coffee at Marlin’s/Starlite with Howard and their friends. Joan collected dolls and liked to play the crane machines and was very good at it. She also liked shopping and looking for deals. Christmas and Halloween were two of her favorite holidays, and she bought many decorations and inflatables for both. She enjoyed dressing her children and grandchildren in matching outfits. Joan loved her children and grandchildren and was very proud of them all.

Grateful for having shared Joan’s life are her children: Cindy (Gene) Wolter (deceased), Tom Barker (deceased), Tammy (Wayne) Arment, Cristy Kuckleberg, and Larry Darcy, all of Aberdeen; thirteen grandchildren: Jennifer Wolter, Raymond Wolter, Jesse Wolter, Steven Barker, Julia Barker, Travis Arment, Ashley Ducharme, Brittany Ellwein, Jason Rohrbach, Justin Rohrbach, Jorden Rohrbach, Cristin Bengston and Cassie Bengston; many great-grandchildren; and her siblings: Fred Hornaman, Jr., John ‘Jack’ Hornaman (twin brother), James Hornaman, and Donna Healy

Preceding Joan in death are her parents, Fred and Ruth Hornaman, husband, Howard Darcy, children, Tom Barker and Cynthia ‘Cindy’ Lynn Wolter, two grandsons, Brian and Gary Wolter, and his son-in-law, Mark Bengston.

The family requests no memorials be made.
