Joel Koskan sentenced to ten years in prison for sexual assault of his adoptive daughter

PIERRE, S.D.(KCCR)- A former South Dakota legislative candidate is sentenced to 10 years in prison for sexually assaulting his adoptive daughter.  Joel Koskan spoke very quietly while addressing the Court, which he did little of in pleading guilty to two counts of felony Incest.

Koskan’s attorney Clint Sargent only argued in Court that numerous letters from the public sent to Sixth Circuit Judge Margo Northup be removed from the pre-sentence investigation saying the letters deserve to be in the trash.

Deputy Attorney General Brent Kempema agreed with Sargent that the letters were not formally filed documents in court and should not excluded.  Northup agreed the letters from the public should not be public.

Koskan’s adoptive daughter spoke briefly in Court saying she wanted what was right and that Koskan should be punished.  Included in the sentence is over 20-thousand dollars in fines and court costs.

Koskan is from Wood in Mellette County.  Both parties agreed to hold the sentencing in Hughes County for scheduling purposes.
