Lake County Commission reject landowners petition addressing CO2 pipeline

LAKE COUNTY, S.D.(KELO)- Carbon Capture Pipeline opponents in Lake County are trying to decide what’s next.

On Tuesday morning, the Lake County Commission rejected petitions they turned in two weeks ago…calling for a public vote of proposed pipeline ordinances.  County Commissioner Adam Leighton:

Frustrations are running high for Lake County landowners trying to call for a public vote on a proposed ordinance on carbon capture pipelines.

Landowners like Lora Zwart pushing for the ordinance say County officials have ignored their request for three years, refusing to publicly discuss the issue.

Zwart, it’s a pattern county officials have followed for three years.

The landowners are working to determine what step to take next.

Petition Circulators say county officials haven’t explained why the petitions were invalidated.

They gathered well over the required number of signatures calling for the public vote.

Zwart says landowners are consulting with legal counsel, trying to determine their next steps.
