LaVere J. Hughes was born to Ray and Alpha (Stockstad) Hughes on June 14, 1927, on a farm near Gettysburg, SD. She attended school in Gettysburg, graduating in 1944 at the age of 16. She then worked in a bank until marrying Harvey Huber on December 12, 1948, at the Lowry Congregational Church. They farmed near Lowry for about three years, and when Harvey became the manager of the Lowry Farmers Exchange, LaVere worked right beside him when she wasn’t working in the cream station.

Their daughters were born at the Holy Infant Hospital in Hoven, SD. Sandy was born on February 18, 1950, and Cyndy was born on July 14, 1952. LaVere was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and great-great-grandmother.

LaVere was active in the church, playing the piano for services and the choir for over 40 years. For many years, she and Harvey mowed their large yard, the churchyard, the park, the grass around the lumber yard and community hall, and the cemetery. She had a huge garden and did a lot of canning. LaVere enjoyed going to Harvey’s baseball games, and as she slowed down with the outside work, she enjoyed sewing, quilting, and embroidery.

LaVere is survived by her daughter, Cyndy (Ron) Schur; grandchildren, Brian (Jennifer) Allmendinger, Brandee (Craig) Reichard, Cory Schanzenbach, Chris (Dennis) White, and Shasta (Brent) Culp; eight great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; sister Karen (Mike) Mullins; two sisters in-law, Phoebe and Marcella Huberl; as well as many nieces, nephews and god children.

Preceding her in death are her parents; husband; daughter, Sandy; her brothers and their wives, Duane (Venoye) Hughes, Derald (Barb) Hughes and Milton Hughes; her sister-in-law and her husband Linda (Pat) Murrey, and brothers-in-law Melvin and Calvin Huber.

The family would also like to thank the staff at Bethesda Town Square and Nursing Home for their thoughtful care of LaVere.
