PIERRE, S.D. (WNAX) – Governor Kristi Noem is offering a proposal to change standards for K – 12 school courses on history and civics.
She wants a focus on South Dakota and American history and how “the US is the greatest country in the history of the world.” She laid out those ideas in her “State of the State” speech.
Wade Pogany, Executive Director of the Associated School Boards of South Dakota, says they are waiting on details.
Pogany says the civics and social studies standards are up for review this summer.
Pogany says he will watch how the proposal moves through the legislature.
He says while the state sets standards, school districts develop their own curriculum.
