Leadership Aberdeen class tackles newcomer challenges

ABERDEEN, S.D.(HubCityRadio) — Moving to a new place is a major life change. It can be hard to make new connections and get to know a new town, especially during a global pandemic.

To help welcome those that are new to Aberdeen – and those that have been here a while but want to get more connected – the 2021 Leadership Aberdeen class has started a movement called “Ask me about Aberdeen.”

Jenny Barnes with Leadership Aberdeen talks more about it.

Beginning June 4, as part of the First Friday event, class members will be downtown at Malchow Plaza from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. to welcome new residents, answer questions, and hand out information about living in Aberdeen. Anyone who wants to get more connected is invited to stop by, sign up for door prizes and maybe make a new friend.

By helping people feel more welcome and connected in our community, Josh Laterell talks how to combat the growing problem of loneliness and isolation experienced by so many, while at the same time making it easier for area employers to recruit and retain new talent.

Expect to see Ask Ae About Aberdeen volunteers at other events throughout the year.

To join the Ask Me About Aberdeen movement as a sponsor or a volunteer, or to find out how to get more connected to the community of Aberdeen, contact the Aberdeen Area Chamber of Commerce at 605-225-2860 or at aberdeen-chamber.com.
