PIERRE, S.D.(KCCR)- The Legislative Task Force on Incarceration Construction Fund has approved a recommendation designed to relieve pressure on the state’s corrections system. Representative Will Mortenson of Pierre says the state needs to address housing prison inmates.
Mortenson says he’s troubled by estimates about how many female inmates could require incarceration in the future.
Mortenson proposed a recommendation to the task force reflective of Corrections Secretary Kellie Wasko’s recommendations to create a woman’s facility in Rapid City and to look for land and design of a new men’s facility near Sioux Falls.
Task Force Chairman, Senator Michael Diedrich of Rapid City, says they are working on a core function of state government.
Diedrich says there is a critical need all across the corrections system.
Diedrich says the report on expected prisoners is shocking.
The Task Force will meet one more time to finalize the recommendation before it will be presented to the Legislature’s Executive Board.
