SIOUX FALLS, S.D.(KELO)- It’s a great location and a great plan that fills an important need…but the wrong leadership.
That’s at the heart of a letter from 19 South Dakota legislators on a plan to build a new men’s penitentiary in Sioux Falls.
They signed on to an Op-Ed published by the Dakota Scout, saying they don’t trust Corrections Secretary Kellie Wasko to carry out the plan.
Representative Tim Reisch is among those lawmakers…he’s also a former Corrections Secretary.
A special prison task force unanimously endorsed the plan to build a 15-hundred bed prison in northeast Sioux Falls at a cost of 650-thousand dollars.
The Governor has called a special legislative session for September 23rd to consider the proposal.
It requires a two-thirds vote to approve the plan.
On Tuesday, DOC Secretary Kellie Wasko announced she will resign from the post effective October 20th. Governor Rhode has established a search to find a replacement for her.
