Lower Brule teacher on two-week adventure in Antarctica

LOWER BRULE, S.D.(DRGNews)- A science teacher at Lower Brule High School in South Dakota is on a two-week professional development adventure taking her to Antarctica.

Bree Oatman, who lives in Pierre, is one of about 30 teachers from the U.S. and Canada chosen by National Geographic to participate in the Grosvenor (grove-ven-er) Teacher Fellowship program. She applied a year ago and found out in Febrary that she’d been accepted.

Oatman says the group got together in Washington, D.C., in April to begin learning about what is expected of them during the two-year fellowship.

Oatman says the group started their trip in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

People may think the weather in Antarctica is brutally cold, but she says it’s really not that different from winter in South Dakota.

Oatman is scheduled to return from Antarctica Dec. 24, 2024.

She’s invites people to follow her journey or submit questions through her blog, which can be found on the ArcGIS Story Maps website.
