Man injured, dog dies in Sunday night fire

ABERDEEN, S.D.(Elisa Sands & Scott Waltman, Aberdeen American News)A man was taken to a hospital with minor injuries after a Sunday night fire on the north side of town, according to information from Aberdeen Fire & Rescue.

Shortly after 9:45 p.m. firefighters responded to 1211 24th Ave. N.E. The home was badly damaged, and a garage behind it — to the north — was destroyed.

Battalion Chief Michael Roemmich said a woman living in the home woke up when she heard a loud bang or pop and noticed the house was on fire. Her husband was taken to a hospital.

The couple lost a dog that did not follow them out of the home, Roemmich said.

It appears the fire started between the house and a garage, he said. The cause of the fire is under investigation, and the state fire marshal’s office has been called to assist. Flames were causing substantial damage to both buildings by the time firefighters arrived, Roemmich said.
