Masten Returns To Northern State

Aberdeen, SD (NSUWolves.com)– Northern State Director of Athletics Nate Davis announced today the addition of Sam Masten to the Northern State staff, as the Coordinator of Marketing and Events. Masten will begin his duties with the Wolves on May 13.

“We are really looking forward to adding Sam to our administrative team,” noted Davis. “He had a great career at Northern with the men’s basketball program and having him come back in this role is exciting. Sam’s leadership abilities and energy will serve him well. I know he will bring a boost to the department.”

Masten’s role will focus primarily on the coordination of all game operations for the athletics department and assist with various athletics related special events. In addition, he will fulfill marketing and sponsorship agreements, assist with ticket sales and customer service initiatives, and will work to increase student and overall fan attendance at Wolves events. Masten will be the main liaison for the NSU Golf Classic scheduled for July 26, 2024.

“I couldn’t be more excited to be coming back to Northern State,” explained Masten. “My experiences at NSU as a student-athlete were second to none. I can’t wait to get to work and help create those same experiences for the current athletic programs. Go Wolves!”

Masten joins the Northern State staff following a season with the Derby Trailblazers Basketball Club, playing professionally in the NBL England. In 2023-24, Masten tallied several accolades with the Trailblazers, most notably, NBL Division I Most Valuable Player. In addition, he was a NBL Division I All-Conference team member. He finished the year ninth in the league in scoring and third in assists, averaging 19.4 points and 6.4 assists per game. The Trailblazers went 21-5 overall and reached the semifinal round of the NBL playoffs.

In addition to his time on the Derby roster, Masten served as the head coach for the University of Derby men’s basketball program. As an undergrad at Northern State, Masten served as an intern in the athletics department in the spring of 2022 and as an Attraction Manager at PlayBall Park for the MLB in July of 2021.

Masten played two seasons for the Wolves men’s basketball program in 2021-22 and 2022-23. The guard scored 1,010 points as a Wolf and 1,465 career points. He was a 2-time NSIC All-Conference selection, earning North Division Player of the Year accolades in 2023. In addition, Masten earned NABC and D2CCA All-Region awards and was named a CSC Academic All-American® and NABC All-American. He represented Northern State at the 2023 NABC Reese’s Division II All-Star game.

He earned his bachelor’s degree in sport administration from Northern State University in May of 2023.
