Aberdeen, SD (NSUWolves.com) – Northern State University head soccer coach Bob Casper announced today the addition of Matthew James to the coaching staff. James joins the Wolves as an assistant coach, following a stint with Hastings College and the Hastings Soccer Club.
“I am pleased we were able to find a high-quality candidate in Matthew to add to our program,” said Casper. “He shares our philosophy for how to operate a collegiate soccer program both athletically and academically. One goal of mine in this process was to find someone to collaborate with about our program, and Matthew has great experience in working to develop and enhance a program.”
“I am thrilled to take on a new challenge at NSU,” explained James. “With their proven track record of success, I am eager to contribute to their continued achievements. I look forward to working alongside experienced coaches, learning from them, and helping players develop both on and off the field.”
As a graduate assistant for the Broncos, James worked in all aspects of the program including skill instruction, recruiting, community involvement, and academics. Hastings College won back-to-back GPAC Championships in 2023 and 2024, qualifying for the NAIA National Tournament. In addition, the program tallied 21 all-conference selections and one All-American.
Casper added, “Matthew has been an integral piece of a very successful Hastings College program and will be ready on day one to help the continued progress our program has made the past four years. I’m grateful for the guidance and development the coaching staff and administration at Hastings College has provided to Matthew and have allowed him to grow into a strong coach.”
James served as the head coach for the Hastings Soccer Club in 2023 and 2024, providing skill instruction to kids ages 8-12. In addition, he managed the game scheduling and practice planning for the U8, U10, and U12 programs. James holds a National D License and is registered Level 1 in Talent Identification with the Football Association and Level 1 in Opposition Analysis with the Professional Football Scouting Association.
“Northern State Soccer has a great collection of players who have high aspirations,” explained Casper. “So, to further enhance our program through the addition of Matthew gives me great excitement for the future of our great program. We can’t wait for him to join us in Aberdeen.”
He earned his bachelor’s degree in exercise science and master’s degree in teaching physical education and health from Hastings College. In addition, James holds an associate’s degree in health and physical education from Southeastern Community College. He played collegiately for Southeastern and Hastings, earning all-conference honors in one season. James was a team captain for both squads and made two national tournament appearances at Hastings following GPAC regular season and tournament championships.
