McIntosh school on lockdown Wednesday

MCINTOSH, S.D.(DRGNews)- Wednesday was the first day of the new school year for students in the McIntosh School District and they ended up spending about 25 minutes of it in a lockdown.

Information from the school and the Corson County Sheriff’s Office says that at 9:19a.m., the McIntosh School District was notified by the Corson County Sheriff’s Office and BIA Police of a potential threat. Following the district’s safety protocols, the school immediately went into “a hard lockdown.”

The Corson County Sheriff’s Office arrived on campus at 9:25a.m., and the student responsible for the threat was located shortly thereafter. At 9:43a.m., law enforcement determined the situation was under control, the lockdown was lifted and normal school operations resumed.

Officials with the McIntosh School and the Corson County Sheriff’s Office told DRG Media Group that the threat was posted by a student on social media and was directed at the school. BIA Police are handing the ongoing investigation. Once that is complete, the school will take disciplinary action according to district policy.

The McIntosh School District extends its appreciation to the Corson County Sheriff’s Office, BIA Police and school staff for their swift and coordinated response. The safety of the students and staff is the top priority, and all threats will continue to be taken seriously in collaboration with law enforcement.
