Medicaid expansion begins July 1st

PIERRE, S.D.(KJJQ)- Enrollment for South Dakota’s Medicaid expansion officially begins July first, but the South Dakota Department of Social Services is now allowing applications for potential participants.

In November of last year, South Dakota voters approved Constitutional Amendment D, expanding Medicaid in the state.

Erik Nelson is Advocacy Director for AARP South Dakota. They were among the groups pushing for passage of Amendment D and Nelson says they’re part of a group of organizations working to get the word out.

Nelson says this will fill a major need in South Dakota.

He says the signup process is the same as for regular Medicaid coverage.
