Meister retiring as fire chief

ABERDEEN, S.D. (By Elisa Sand esand@aberdeennews.com) – Randy Meister is hanging up his hat as fire chief for Aberdeen Fire & Rescue.

Meister has been chief for three years, and previously held positions as battalion chief, lieutenant, firefighter and deputy fire marshal, a job he started in 1994 when he began his career with the fire department.

Meister gave his notice in April. His last day is Friday. He has worked for Aberdeen Fire & Rescue for 26 years.

“It’s been a great opportunity,” Meister said. “I can’t thank the city and department staff enough. It’s been a good ride.”

Meister, 48, became eligible for retirement this year through the South Dakota Retirement system. He said he has some opportunities on the horizon, but no definite plans.

According to Jill Mohr, human resources director for the city, the fire chief position will likely be posted in June with interviews likely in August.
