Members of the Pierre Fire Department over the weekend were taught water rescue and recovery procedures

PIERRE, S.D,(DRGNews)- Nine members of the Pierre Volunteer Fire Department’s Rescue Squad spent the weekend in the classroom and in the water learning current techniques in rescue and recovery.

Steve Wilson is an instructor with Dive Rescue International out of Fort Collins, CO. He says rescuers have to start with what they know and work toward the unknown.

Wilson says they’re learning a systematic approach to any type of dive event the squad may get called to.

What was the final scenario?

Wilson says this training is in addition to other certifications the team members have already earned.

Wilson says the Pierre/Fort Pierre area is fortunate to have such a dedicated group of volunteers.

About a half dozen members from a dive rescue team in Lake County (Madison area) also attended the three day training.
