WALLACE, S.D. (KXLG) – Early Sunday morning just before 2 a.m. Codington County Sheriff’s Deputies and the South Dakota Highway Patrol responded to a call near Wallace South Dakota for an assault call involving a gunshot wound. On arrival Deputies spoke to Austin Anderson age 22 of Watertown, who had a gunshot wound to his leg. And, although the injuries were non-life-threatening, he was transported to Prairie Lakes Hospital by Watertown Ambulance. Authorities say the incident began when another man, Ed Becking was entertaining a gathering in that area.
Anderson apparently showed up and was forced to leave two times. When Anderson returned a third time he allegedly assaulted another person. When Individuals at the gathering broke up the fight Anderson made a fire arm gesture towards the group while running away into a wooded area. Becking pursued Anderson and found him near a tree line on the property.
Anderson made a statement about possibly being armed and reached into his waist belt. It was then that Becking fired at Anderson while retreating, striking Anderson in the thigh. Becking of rural Wallace was arrested for the shooting and charged with Aggravated Assault. Austin Anderson was arrested for Aggravated Assault that occurred earlier in the evening. He was also arrested for trespassing.
Edward Becking has since been released from jail on a $10,000 cash/surety bond. Anderson was granted a personal recognizance bond with conditions he not make contact with any of the victims. He has since been released from the hospital.
