Michael ‘Milo’ Hagen was born on May 2, 1965 to Milo D. Hagen and Evelyn D. (Young) Hagen in Aberdeen, SD. He grew up in Aberdeen, graduating from Aberdeen Central High School in 1983. Throughout his childhood, he was passionate about baseball and played with the Smitty’s through high school. After high school, he attended college at St. John’s University in Minnesota where he continued to play baseball. Michael graduated from college in 1987, but enjoyed getting back to campus for football games or just to visit the beautiful place that he connected with so strongly.

Michael spent a few fun-filled years in Minneapolis before moving back to Aberdeen. Michael joined his father at Cotman-Hagen Insurance for many years. Following the death of his father, Michael continued working in the field for Modern Woodmen. In 2017, he was named to the Modern Woodman President’s Cabinet, a distinction that recognized him as one of the top representatives nationwide.

On April 17, 1993, Michael married Jill Johnson at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Aberdeen. Together they had two children, Zach and Rachel, who they raised in Aberdeen.

Michael was an avid collector and always had his eye out for a good deal and unique items. He converted his talents in baseball to golf later in life, and it quickly became his favorite pastime and an activity that he could share with his children.

Michael’s presence lit up every room he found himself in. He was quick to make friends, making people feel comfortable and spreading his infectious laughter and joy for life. His heart was big and caring, and his presence will be dearly missed.

Grateful for having shared Michael’s life are his children, Zach Hagen and Rachel Hagen (Grant Patronik); and sister, Cathy Chandler.

Preceding Michael in death are his father, Milo Hagen; Mother, Evelyn Hagen; and infant sister, Elizabeth Hagen.
