Mitchell man arrested after high speed chase in Hughes, Stanley counties

PIERRE, S.D. (DRG News) – A 23-year-old man from Mitchell is in custody in Hughes County after a brief high speed chase in Hughes and Stanley counties Friday evening (Oct. 2, 2020).

Information from the Hughes County Sheriff’s Office says Hunter VanAsh was under surveillance for being a suspect in crimes committed in the Fort Pierre area as well as for an active felony absconder warrant from the South Dakota Department of Corrections. VanAsh was seen getting into a vehicle and, while officers moved into position to make a traffic stop, VanAsh began driving at a high rate of speed. Officers initiated a pursuit which traveled a short distance in Pierre, then into Fort Pierre and ended on Hwy. 14 just west of Fort Pierre in Stanley County. VanAsh was taken into custody without incident.

Hughes County Sheriff Darin Johnson says VanAsh is charged with Aggravated Eluding, Reckless Driving, Speeding and Stop Sign Violations in connection with the pursuit.
