Mixed year for sales taxes

PIERRE, S.D. (WNAX) – The Interim Joint Appropriations Committee of the South Dakota legislature meeting Monday in Pierre got a report on tax collections for fiscal year 2019 that closed at the end of June.

State Revenue Department Secretary Jim Terwilliger says it was an up and down year for sales taxes.

He says it was the first year that sales tax collections totaled more than a billion dollars.

The state got the first online sales tax returns during the year that resulted from the Wayfair court decision last year.

Terwilliger says those didn’t translate into any big revenue jumps.

Terwilliger says they didn’t budget for those online taxes, but did say what was collected was disappointing.

The committee is also being updated on the latest revenue projections for the current fiscal year.
