WATERTOWN, S.D.(Press Release)- A fatal two-vehicle crash occurred on Thursday, June 27, 2024, at 9:59 a.m. The incident took place at the intersection of 455th Ave and 156th Street, 16 miles north of Watertown, SD.
The first vehicle involved was a 2019 Chevrolet Equinox driven by Carol Fay McFarland, an 87-year-old female from Webster, SD. McFarland, who was wearing a seatbelt, did not receive any injuries. However, her passenger, Delwin Henry McFarland, an 88-year-old male also from Webster, SD, reportedly wearing a seatbelt, Delwin McFarland sustained fatal injuries.
The second vehicle was a 2022 AGCO 8300C Terragator, a type of crop sprayer. The driver was Micah Martin Sergey Dietmeier, a 21-year-old male from Milbank, SD. Dietmeier, also wearing a seatbelt, did not sustain any injuries.
Preliminary crash information indicates that Dietmeier turned left from 455th Avenue into a field approach when Carol McFarland attempted to pass and collided with the sprayer. Delwin McFarland suffered severe, life-threatening injuries and was transported by ambulance to a local hospital. Unfortunately, he passed away from his injuries on July 3.
The South Dakota Highway Patrol, an agency of the South Dakota Department of Public Safety, is investigating the crash. All information released so far is only preliminary. Further updates will be provided as the investigation progresses.
