Name released in Huron fire that killed an area firefighter

HURON, S.D.(KOKK)- As the 2023 South Dakota State Fair was wrapping up on Labor Day afternoon a large structure fire ignited at a Huron Business.  The scene was met with a second tragic event in the line of duty death of an area firefighter.  On Tuesday September 5th Huron Fire Chief Ron Hines gave an update.

Hines spoke about Joshua Kogel and how he represented firefighter.

At the time of the fire the ambient air temperature was 100 degrees.

With the loss of life at the scene the SD State Fire Marshall’s office and SD DCI were a part of the investigation with was determined to be accidental and has been turned over to the insurance company.  Hines said the difficulty in the loss of fellow firefighter Joshua Kogel is compounded with the impact of the loss of a local business.

Other agencies assisting the Huron Fire Department included Cavour Volunteer Fire Department, Wolsey and Alpena Fire Departments, Huron Ambulance, Huron Public Works, Huron Police, SD DCI, SD State Fire Marshall, SD Highway Patrol and the Beadle County Sheriff’s Office.
