Nebraska reports increase in mumps cases

YANKTON, S.D. (WNAX) – The Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services has reported an increase in mumps cases, with at least 30 cases, mainly among those who attended a wedding in northeast Nebraska.

Some of those cases were treated by Yankton medical providers.

Elizabeth Healy is the Infection Prevention Coordinator at Avera Sacred Heart Hospital in Yankton.

Healy says there can be several serious complications from mumps.

Healy says anyone can catch mumps.

Healy says a MMR booster vaccination is still the best way to prevent the spread of mumps.
