New Capitol security process outlined

PIERRE, S.D. (WNAX) – Visitors to the 2020 South Dakota legislative session will find more restrictions in getting into the Capitol Building.

Department of Public Safety Secretary Craig Price outlined the new security process to members of the Executive Board this week.

Price says the entrance will have metal detectors and an x-ray machine. He says they hope to have the secure entrance ready in time for the start of the legislative session.

Price says those with enhanced carry permits will be able to carry their weapon into the building after they go through the screening.

Executive Board Chairman, Representative Steven Haugaard of Sioux Falls says he has heard from a number of visitors about the access to the building.

The security entrance will be in place on the north side of the building next to the main parking lot.
