New safety measures won’t greatly impact access to Capitol

PIERRE, S.D. (WNAX) – Additional security measures will be added to the South Dakota State Capitol Building in Pierre this year.

A security screening room will be added to the north entrance of the building. Department of Public Safety spokesman Tony Mangan says it will be a more visible addition.

Mangan says the public will still be able to easily access the building.

Mangan says they don’t think there will be slowdowns when the legislature is in session.

Mangan says the security will comply with the bill passed this session allowing guns to be carried into the capitol.

He says the reconstruction should be done by the start of the 2020 legislative session.
