New security system activated at State Capitol

PIERRE, S.D. (WNAX) – The start of the 2020 South Dakota legislative session included increased security to get into the capitol building in Pierre. Limited access to the building met legislators and visitors as they made their way into the building.

Department of Public Safety Secretary Craig Price says there was no one reason to add the security.

Price says they want to head off any potential issues.

Legislators passed a bill last year allowing those with an enhanced carry permits to have a gun in the capitol building. Price says those people still need to go through security.

First day lines moved fairly quickly through the check point.
