North Sioux City train derailment caused by railcar malfunction, according to preliminary investigation

NORTH SIOUX CITY, S.D. (KTIV) – Authorities continue to clean up a train derailment in North Sioux City that resulted in over a dozen railcars tipping over, with some hanging off a bridge.

According to Union County Emergency Manager Jason Westcott, a preliminary investigation suggests the train derailment was possibly caused by a railcar malfunction. The malfunction happened just before 4 p.m. Wednesday near the train bridge located by the Military Road and Main Street intersection. The bridge was damaged due to the derailment, with drone footage showing it had partially collapsed.

“At this point, the investigation and what caused the derailment has not been completed,” said Westcott Thursday morning. “They do believe it possibly was a failure in one of the railroad cars itself.”

Westcott has confirmed to KTIV that a total of 16 cars derailed, five of them were ethanol tankers and the rest were hopper cars. Westcott confirmed the tankers were carrying ethanol but none of them were leaking. Most of the other railcars had nothing in them, with authorities stating all the cars that were hanging off the bridge were empty.

“At this time the big thing is that there is no danger to the public,” said Westcott Wednesday night. “We have nothing leaking, nothing has been spilled. The train crew is working with us very well on getting the train back on the tracks, making sure everything is taken care of.”
