Northern Baseball Takes 3 of 4 From Winona

Sioux Falls, SD (NSUWolves.com) [Games 1 &2]  – Timely hits led the Northern State University baseball team to take down Winona State, 11-2 in game one but fell short in game two 9-7. The Wolves tallied 20 runs off of 21 hits while notching ten extra-base hits on the day.

HOW IT HAPPENED GAME 1

  • Winona State kicked off the game with a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the first to put them ahead
  • After a scoreless second inning, Nick Friedges knocked one down the right field line for a double that scored Brennan Phillips and Jackson Meyers to take the lead
  • On a fielder’s choice groundout by Karson Hesser scored Friedges to put Northern State up by two runs to close out the top of the third
  • The Warriors chipped away from the deficit in the bottom of the third inning with one run
  • Jordan DeMarce reached first on an error that scored Meyers in the fourth inning; Phillips doubled to left center to score DeMarce
  • Jonah Schmidt kept the Wolves rolling in the fourth after a single that scored Hesser; Xander Paar singled to score Weidner

  • It was all Northern State in game two as the Wolves scored 12 runs on 15 hits and gave up just one error defensively
  • NSU tallied three runs in the first, one in the second, two in the fourth, four in the fifth, and two in the sixth
  • Drew Burkholder had a day on the bump, adding his third win of the season in six innings pitched with six strikeouts
  • Brennan Phillips, Jack Weidner, and Karson Hesser kicked off the scoring for the Wolves in the first
  • Hesser tallied a 1-out double down the right field line in the second, scoring Phillips, and Northern quickly held a 4-0 lead through two
  • Winona State cut that lead in half in the bottom of the third, however Northern State responded making up the difference and then some
  • Nick Friedges scored on a Weidner single to center and Weidner scored on a fields choice to the shortstop by Andrew Wedwick in the fourth
