Northern distributes CARES Act grants, creates Student Emergency Relief Fund

ABERDEEN, S.D. (Press Release) – Northern State University is helping students impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic any way it can including finding ways to provide financial assistance.

One method of financial help was provided through the Coronavirus Aid, Relief and Economic Security Act. Northern received $329,889 in CARES Act funding to be awarded to students, said NSU Director of Financial Aid Sharon Kienow. Nearly all of the funds have been disbursed to 274 students, Kienow said.

The NSU Foundation has also created a Student Emergency Relief Fund to assist students impacted by COVID-19 or other emergencies. This fund is made possible thanks to gifts from the university’s generous donors. To make a contribution, contact the NSU Foundation at 605-626-2550 or nsualumni@northern.edu.

For both funds, grant money can be used by eligible students for college-related expenses including tuition and fees, course materials, housing, meals, technology, health care and child care.

“Our main goal is for our students to have the best educational experience possible, and we know it’s difficult for students to do that when they have financial concerns,” said NSU President Dr. Tim Downs. “We’re thrilled that we’re able to help our students this way, so they can continue to focus on their studies and stay on track with their college experience.”
