ABERDEEN, S.D. (Press Release) – Northern State University’s International Friendship Family Program is taking applications for families to share their American experience while making students feel welcome in our community.
Through the NSU Friendship Family Program, international students spend time with their “Friendship Family” doing family things at least once a month and keep in contact weekly. The name “Friendship Family” is used instead of “Host Family” because the students are responsible for themselves financially and generally live on campus.
“One of the best ways we can directly help show Aberdeen is globally invested is to spend time with international students, and show them what American Midwest kindness is all about,” said Heidi Hepola, coordinator of the NSU Friendship Family Program. “The program’s ideal function is families doing what they already do, but inviting international students to experience it too. A simple family night of board games goes a long way, back to their home country in their fond memories, forever.”
To apply, fill out the online Family Application, and share information such as hobbies and availability for a customized friendship connection. Participating in this program includes monthly scheduled activities that often involve discounts to featured events in the community.
