Northern State University President named priority candidate for Chancellor at Nebraska Kearney

PIERRE, S.D.(Press Release) – The South Dakota Board of Regents announced Tuesdy that Dr. Neal Schnoor, president of Northern State University (NSU), has been selected as the priority candidate for chancellor of the University of Nebraska at Kearney (UNK).

Schnoor has served as president of Northern State University since 2021, guiding the institution through a period of growth and transformation, including new academic initiatives and enhanced student support services.

“It continues to be my privilege to serve all of you and the community of Aberdeen as president of Northern State University,” Schnoor said. “While I am excited for this new opportunity at the University of Nebraska at Kearney, I will always be grateful for my time at Northern and the relationships we’ve built together.”

South Dakota Board of Regents Executive Director Nathan Lukkes thanked Schnoor for his leadership and contributions to higher education in South Dakota.

“President Schnoor brings a heartfelt commitment to student success and institutional excellence throughout his time at Northern State University,” said Lukkes. “We congratulate him and wish him continued success.”

Schnoor’s selection as priority candidate at UNK begins a 30-day public vetting process in Nebraska, per state policy. His departure date from NSU will be finalized pending the outcome of that process.

President Schnoor will remain in his current position at NSU until late June, subject to a successful chancellor appointment. The Board of Regents will provide details on interim leadership at Northern State University and presidential search details at a later date.
