NSU Fine Arts Recital on Feb 20

ABERDEEN, S.D. (Press Release) – The NSU School of Fine Arts presents Darci Bultema, soprano and Audrey Miller, clarinet in recital on Feb 20 at 7:30pm in the Krikac Auditorium on the NSU campus.

The program features a premiere of the work “She Loves” by NSU music professor and Aberdeen University Civic Symphony conductor Christopher Stanichar. “She Loves” is a group of five songs based on poetry by poets Sara Teasdale, Emily Dickinson, Christina Rossetti, and Elizabeth Barrett Browning.

This set showcases the many different emotions of love such as ecstasy, loss, darkness, and passion. The work is a commission for Audrey Miller and Darci Bultema, who have created the “Virinca Duo” with the mission to perform works for soprano and clarinet with an emphasis on new and seldom performed music.  The commission was made possible by a generous grant from the South Dakota Arts Council.

Also on the program is Robert Schumann’s famous song cycle “Frauenliebe und leben” which translates to “Woman’s Love and Life.” The songs describe a woman’s love for a man in her point of view from their first meeting into marriage, family, and death. NSU Dean of the School of Fine Arts Kenneth Boulton will be collaborating with Darci Bultema on this cycle.

The final piece of the recital will be “Viktor’s Tale” from the motion picture “The Terminal,” composed by John Williams. The piece will be performed by Audrey Miller and Christopher Stanichar, and a duet with NSU graduate student Molly Royals on clarinet and Dr. Miller entitled Sonata by Francis Poulenc.

Admission is free and open to the public. For more information on the event, please contact Kenneth Boulton at kenneth.boulton@northern.edu.
