NSU Softball Begins Season 5-1 in Saint Cloud

St. Cloud, MN (NSUWolves.com) [FRI]– The Northern State University softball team opened their season with two wins over Black Hills State and Sioux Falls on Friday. The Wolves combined for 18 hits and 12 runs in the two wins, giving up just one defensive error on the day.

HOW IT HAPPENED vs. BLACK HILLS STATE

  • Northern scored first on a 2-out single in the bottom of the first by Kyra Knudtson, scoring Claire Zbylut who reached base on an infield single
  • Black Hills State tied the game in the top of the third and the Wolves answered in the bottom of the fourth with four go-ahead runs
  • Avarie Eagle grabbed the lead for NSU with her first homerun of the season, followed up by a 2-run Ashley Fauske single and 1-run Knudtson single; both up the middle
  • The Yellow Jackets added a run in the sixth, however it wasn’t enough to seal to contest or force extras
  • Northern scored their five runs on eight hits with one error defensively, earning Lexi Chase her first win of 2024
  • Chase threw seven complete, giving up just five hits and two earned runs, while striking out 11
  • Eagle notched the team’s lone extra base hit and went 2-for-3, while Knudtson led the Wolves going a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate

  • Avaria Eagle belted her second long ball in as many games, this time a 2-run shot, in the top of the first
  • Emma Owens and Kamdyn Barrientos scored on a Lexi Chase single and Ashley Fauske scored on a bases loaded walk to Eagle in the second
  • Chase and Fauske added the sixth inning insurance runs on back-to-back singles by Fauske and Claire Zbylut
  • Abby Rux took the circle for NSU, tossing her first win of the year with just one earned run and three strikeouts
  • Fauske, Zbylut, and Chase each tallied two hits in the victory

HOW IT HAPPENED vs. BLACK HILLS STATE

  • Claire Zbylut kicked off day two for the Wolves with a homerun in the top of the first
  • Northern extended their lead with three runs in the fourth on a bases loaded walk by Ashley Fauske, scoring Madi Jones, single up the middle by Zbylut, scoring Alysa Lowe, and single to center by Kyra Knudtson scoring Lexi Chase
  • The Yellow Jackets rallied back in the bottom of the frame, coming within one of the Wolves
  • Brooke Wolf scored the final run of the win for NSU in the top of the fifth, as a pinch runner for Kamdyn Barrientos who singled with one out

  • Northern kicked off the contest with six runs in the first and added two in the second, one in the third, three in the fifth, and six in the seventh
  • Scoring for the Wolves in the first was Ashley Fauske, Claire Zbylut, Kyra Knudtson, Avarie Eagle, Emma Owens, and Eden Ford
  • Knudtson added her second run of the contest in the second on a single by Elly Smith and Smith followed suit scoring on a double by Owens
  • Alexandria Arndt crossed the plate in the third on a double to center by Fauske, after leading off the inning with a single up the middle

  • The Huskies scored all three of their runs in the bottom of the third and the Wolves were unable to respond offensively
  • Northern left three runners on base in their final four plate appearances, scoring their two runs on seven hits

  • Arndt and Chase led the team with two hits, while Eagle notched the lone extra base hit, a double
