NSU Softball Squad Finishes Florida Trip with Split

LEESBURG, FL (NSUWolves.com) – On the final day from the sunshine state, the Northern State University softball team came away with a split. Both games ended via run rule, with the Wolves notching a six inning victory over Clarion University. Northern ends THE Spring Games with a 4-8 record from Florida.

Final Score Game 1 (SHU): Northern State 1, Seton Hill 11 (6 inn.)

Final Score Game 2 (CU): Northern State 11, Clarion University 3 (6 inn.)

Records: Northern State 7-9, Seton Hill 7-2, Clarion 0-14

 

GAME 1 – SHU

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The Griffons led off the game with three runs in the top of the first.
  • Northern held them scoreless through the second, third, and fourth innings, however Seton Hill tacked on another eight runs in the fifth and sixth innings.
  • The Wolves lone run of the game, came off the bat of Kaitlyn King who homered to left field in the bottom of the fourth.
  • NSU tallied just one run on eight hits with five errors on defense.
  • Andrea Cherney started for NSU and suffered her fourth loss of the season, giving three runs on two hits with three walks.

  • Kaitlyn King: 1-for-2, 1 run, 1 RBI
  • Cassidy Schaar: 1-for-1

 

GAME 2 – CU

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Northern plated their first run in the bottom of the first on an error by the Clarion right fielder. Julia Sullwold scored on the play after leading off the game with a single to left.
  • The Golden Eagles took the lead in the top of the next frame with two runs, and added a third in the top of the fourth.
  • Down by two, the Wolves opened the flood gates in the bottom of the fourth with seven runs on four hits.
  • Scoring for NSU in the fourth was Shayla Steinley (pinch running for Kennady Thompson who walked), Emma Terveer (pinch running for Madison Rutter who reached on an error), Julia Sullwold (running for Jamie Fisher who doubled down the right field line), Cassidy Schaar (reached on an error), Rachel Reinke (single through the left side), Sara Bendt (single up the middle), and Jen Martin (3-run homerun).
  • The Wolves led 8-3 heading into the field three innings of regulation.
  • Courtney Sjerven, Julia Sullwold, and Sara Bendt led off the Northern State sixth with a walk, single to left, and bunt single. Rachel Reinke scored both Sjerven and Sullwold on the following play, extending the NSU lead to 10-3.
  • Jen Martin then sealed the run rule victory for the Wolves with a sacrifice fly to center field, plating Bendt.
  • The Wolves combined for 11 runs on ten hits with errorless defense.
  • Makenzie Merritt threw her third win of the season on the mound.

Northern State returns to regular season action on Sunday March 17 at Minot State. The Wolves will take on the Beavers in non-conference play at 12 and 2 p.m. in the Minot Dome.
