NSU Softball Squad Turns Things Around with Two Wins

KISSIMMEE, FL (NSUWolves.com) – The Northern State University softball team broke their 7-game loss streak with a Wednesday sweep versus the University of the Sciences and Alderson Broaddus University. The two wins move the Wolves to 3-7 overall from Florida and 6-8 on the year.

GAME 1 – USCI

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • USciences took an early lead notching two runs in their first plate appearance of the contest.
  • The Wolves began to chip away in the top of the fourth, as Courtney Sjerven scored on a ground ball to second base by Shayla Steinley.
  • The Devils added to their lead in the bottom of the fourth, however Northern ran away with the game in the following two innings
  • NSU tallied four runs in both the fifth and sixth innings to secure the victory.
  • Jen Martin led off the fifth inning with a homerun to deep right field.
  • The other three runs in the fifth were scored by Natalie Gabbert (singled to left), Anne Jonas (pinch running for Madison Rutter who singled to right), and Rachel Reinke (double down the left field line).
  • Scoring in the sixth were Jamie Fisher (singled to left), Julia Sullwold (pinch ran for Jen Martin who singled up the middle), Rachel Reinke (walk), and Kennady Thompson (hit-by-pitch).
  • Northern tallied nine runs on 16 hits, with one error defensively. The Wolves left 15 runners on base in the win.

GAME 2 – AB

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The Battlers notched one run in the bottom of the first, to take an early lead.
  • Julia Sullwold notched the first hit of the game for the Wolves, a double to left center field, and scored on Jen Martin’s single to right in the bottom of the first, tying the game at 1-all.
  • Alderson Broaddus regained the lead in the top of the third with five runs on five hits and two errors.
  • Jen Martin broke through for the Wolves in the third with a single up the middle, scoring Cassidy Schaar and Julia Sullwold who reached base via hit by pitch and a single.
  • Madison Rutter continued the Northern rally with a double to right center, scoring Jamie Fisher who was also hit by a pitch. Fisher’s run brought the Wolves within two of the Battlers.
  • Rachel Reinke tied things up for the Wolves scoring Martin and Rutter, and came around to score on a single through the right side by Kennady Thompson. Reinke’s run gave the Wolves their first lead of the game.
  • Julia Sullwold  extended the Wolves lead in the fifth (8-6), scoring Kaitlyn King on a single up the middle.
  • Northern recorded eight runs on 15 hits with three defensive errors.
  • Makenzie Merritt started on the hill throwing 2.1 innings, giving up five earned runs on seven hits.
  • Jamie Fisher entered in relief throwing the final 4.2 innings of work, earning her second win of the season. She held the Battlers to just one earned run on five hits with one strikeout.
